Lake Michigan Unfreezing is a mixed media installation created by photographer Lauren Stoklas and myself, over the course of several months in the winter of 2018. The frozen lake is alluring, due not only to its spectacular sights, but also the wonderfully strange and mysterious sounds the ice makes during the cold months. Lauren and I set out to capture both aspects of this pristine environment. The pictures and audio recordings are unaltered – they are set up chronologically from January to March to show the lake returning to its familiar state. The audio is not a soundtrack for the picture, and likewise, the pictures are not a visual representation of the sound — rather, they are presented as a single unit in order to give a more complete view of the lake. We believe that the sounds of an environment are just as important as the sights, and hope that observers will find Lake Michigan Unfreezing a lens for this shift in sensory focus and perspective.
