Deep Channels: Underwater Sound Lab is an interactive sound lab and performance space that allows visitors to explore the creative possibilities of underwater sounds and acoustic environments. The work was commissioned by Detroit Science Gallery for their Summer 2019 exhibit DEPTH. The lab consists of three stations where visitors can create underwater sounds as well as listen to a variety of pre-recorded sounds, including dolphin clicks and boat engines from various underwater environments.
The first two stations allow visitors to explore water as an acoustic environment. At these stations, a hydrophone is placed inside a bowl of water, and sounds are made using mallets, coins and ice . At the third station, visitors can create unique underwater soundscapes by adjusting the volume of pre-recorded anthropogenic, geophonic and biological sounds. The soundscapes they create will be recorded and available for them to keep after they leave the lab.
